Yale University gives Machupicchu artefacts back.

Thursday, 26 March, 2026 | Blog | 0 Comentarios

Professor Hiran Bingham, appointed as a lecturer in South American History at Yale University, is considered who rediscovered Machupicchu in 1911, he performed several excavations and studies within 1911 and 1916, finding a vast number of ceramics, bones, textiles, and other artefacts that were taken to the New Haven’s University in Connecticut. They have been evaluated and analyzed since then by specialists from the University’s Archaeology Department.

The Peruvian Government, and their president Mr Alan Garcia, negotiated the remand of all archaeological artefacts in 2011, in time for the 100 year anniversary of the scientific discovery of Machupicchu. Yale finally agreed and planned to give everything back in 3 parts to the Cusco’s well known colonial building Casa Concha.

The first part arrived in April 2011, consisted in 366 complete pieces and 1000 fragments. The second part arrived in December 2011 that consisted in 26 boxes with 77 complete skeletons, and the third part made it home in 2012, with 127 boxes full of artefacts.

All pieces are being properly displayed to public at the Machupicchu Museum-Casa Concha in Cusco city. They all are being deeply researched and analyzed by the Social Science Faculty at San Antonio Abad del Cusco University, coordinating with Yale University, represented in Cusco by Dr. Richard Burger.

Great opportunity to know and understand more about this human made marvelous, Machupicchu, that still hides several mysteries. The Machupicchu Museum-Casa Concha is located in Santa Catalina Street in Cusco city, doors open at 09:00 to 17:00 from Monday through Friday, and from 09:00 through 12:00 on Saturdays. Closes during holidays and festivity days.

The Alpaca.

Thursday, 26 March, 2026 | Blog | 0 Comentarios
